CARBON NEUTRALISATION PROJECT – AESABESP PDF Print E-mail

The Carbon Neutralisation Project, coordinated by the environmental lawyer Vanessa Hasson and by the chemist Maria Aparecida Silva de Paula, is the base ground of a Program for a Formal Environmental Education taken on with the aim to encourage the participants of Fenasan 2011 to apply sustainable initiatives in the organization of the event.

More than plant trees to promote the fixation of gases that provokes the greenhouse effect; the main objective of the project is to reduce gas emission originated from the activities developed because of the event.

Bearing this in mind, we will prioratise actions focused on raising awareness and aiming to tune the local life with global issues.

The initiatives proposed in the scope of the Project are more of raising awareness than the quantitative reduction of CO2. A teaching method will be applied to demonstrate to all attendees, exhibitors, suppliers and visitors the benefits of using sustainable material in the stands, reducing print handouts, reducing energy consumption, the rational use of water, recycling waste – based on  Sabesp’s 3Rs Program (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) – moreover stimulate the non use of disposable material, like cups, flatware, plates and other recipients. Regarding the issue of reducing water and energy consumption, Sabesp will monitor the efficiency of these practices during the event.

Also during the exhibition, these initiatives will be constantly stimulated and, at the end of the trade show, we will calculate the amount of CO2 emission based on the waste production, energy consumption and transport used.

Considering that vehicles are responsible for 78% of GEE emission – Greenhouse effect -  in the City of São Paulo, one of the main features in the transversal activities of this project is to stimulate the use of alternative transport.

Therefore we have established a partnership with Interbros who designed the application Carona Brasil (Brazil Ride), so all visitors can register online on the hotsite http://www.caronafenasan.com.br to organise the rides.

Another courtesy of the organization in order to reduce CO2 emission is the free shuttle service from Tietê subway station and from Sabesp headquarters at Rua 13 de Maio, 1642, Bela Vista, to the exhibition pavilion.

We expect as a result a reduction in the number of trees which must be plant to neutralize carbon emission comparing to previous editions in which the Carbon Free methodology was applied. Our target is to plant a number of trees greater than those aimed at neutralizing CO2 emission in order to promote a better environmental recovery.
